Cross Country Update

Special Thanks to Brad Lance of Our Savior Lutheran for heading up the coordination of Cross Country season this year. Here is the review report he submitted with the results of the 2011 Season:

VARSITY

All-Conference

Boys

  Payton Argo- Lancaster Christian

  Noble Stephenson- Franklin Classical

  Cole Welss- Franklin Classical

  Brandon Baker- Lancaster Christian

Girls

Madison Spencer- Dickson Academy

Payton Brasher- Dickson Academy

Allison Hogue- Currey Ingram

We had 24 MTAC and 15 non-MTAC students compete in high school cross country this Fall. This number should easily double next year. Lighthouse Christian and perhaps Gabriel Christian are also interested in joining the conference as a result of cross country.

Payton Argo of Lancaster Christian and Noble Stephenson of Franklin Classical had a great dual all season long. Payton won most meets, including the conference championship. However, Noble was always highly competitive. Payton ran a season best of 17:28 in the championship meet. Noble ran a personal best if 17:53 in teh 6th meet of the season. Cole Wells, just a freshman at Franklin Classical, and Brandon Baker of Lancaster, rounded out the boys team. The Currey Ingram boys won the team championship.

Dickson Academy's dynamic duo of Madison Spencer and Payton Brasher finished #1 and #2 in the conference meet and in the final girls rankings. Dickson Academy easily won the girls team championship.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The 2011 MTAC middle school cross country season was a huge success. Currey Ingram was a fabulous host of all 7 meets. Ben Goolsby of Dickson Academy and Kelly Fish of Currey Ingram were extremely vital in the success of this year's program. We had 65 boys and 46 girls from conference teams participate in at least one race this year. It is my understanding that we more than doubled the participation numbers from last year. In addition, we had another 84 runners from non-member schools participate. Oak Hill School (Nashville) and Lighthouse Christian (Antioch) should be seeking membership this Spring as a result of our cross country program. Grace Christian (Lieper's Fork) and St. Clement Christian (Antioch) have already begun the process. Akiva School (Nashville) is also interested.

In the girls middle school division, Clarksville Christian won the conference championship. Our Savior Lutheran was the top MTAC team at several meets and placed 2nd in the championship meet. Sumner Academy was also competitive during the season and placed 3rd in the conference. Dickson Academy, Franklin Classical, Providence, and McClain also fielded teams. Future MTAC member Grace Christian had a team. Prospective members Oak Hill, Lighthouse Christian, Covenant School, Agathos Classical, Harding Academy, and Akiva School participated. Oak Hill had a particularly powerful team.

Individually, there were some outstanding runners this season. Tucker Spencer of Dickson Academy was a phenom. She would have been one of the top 6-7 runners in the boys division. Sara Huggins of Clarksville Christian and Olivia Lauer, a 5th grader at Our Savior Lutheran, also enjoyed outstanding seasons. The 9 members of the All-Conference teams are listed below. Clarksville Christian and Our Savior Lutheran each had 3 members. Dickson Academy, Currey Ingram, and Sumner Academy each had a representative.

The Boys Division was the most competitive of all the elementary, middle, and high school divisions. Sumner Academy had a truly amazing team with both the top team and the top runner. Alex Teal won by huge margins in very competitive races. Our Savior Lutheran edged Currey Ingram for the runner-up position at the conference meet. Both schools went back-and-forth throughout the season. Dickson Academy, Franklin Classical, Providence, and McClain also fielded teams. Prospective future members Grace Christian, Lighthouse, Oak Hill, Akiva, Agathos, Covenant, and Harding also ran in many meets.

Individually for the boys, Sumner Academy and Our Savior Lutheran each placed 4 runners on the all-conference team.  Sumner was particularly impressive with 4 of the top 7 positions.  Currey Ingram was well represented with 3 boys in the top 9.  Dickson Academy had 2 runners and Providence had 1.  Just as with the girls, if you believe we awarded too many spots, I would approve for the top 8 in the final standings to make First Team and 9th-15th to make 2nd Team.

I believe we can enjoy another huge increase in cross country numbers next Fall.  Many schools still don't have teams.  I would think that schools like Franklin Classical, Franklin Christian, Aaron Academy, etc. could easily produce competitive teams if someone worked on developing those programs.

Sumner Academy and Oak Hill have expressed interest in hosting meets for the 2012 season.  We'll keep most meets at Currey Ingram, however, I think adding additional sites will help grow the conference and keep boredom from setting into running the exact same course year-after-year.

An Eighth Grader Awarded MVP of the High School Soccer Tournament!

This past weeks soccer championship game in Murfreesboro was electric. Players were battling the entire 90 minutes. Parents were just as passionate, to the point that their stirring had to be monitored.

With 5 minutes to go, the HCA Crusaders tied the game 2-2. It wasnt until 2 minutes later that FCS was awarded a penalty kick to win the game 3-2!

But one of the more exciting stories of the tournament was that amongst an extremely talented all tournament team of high schoolers, the tournament MVP award was given to Jonathan Farmer. Jonathan hasnt yet began high school and was playing up as an 8th grader!

Congratulations to the FCS Knights and all the teams that participated in our 2011 Soccer Tournament! With a week like this last one, we look forward to the coming years of even greater competition!
